Mercury Warning To Be Added To Albertsons' Seafood Cases

By Sarah Dallof

Albertsons' seafood cases will soon carry a new warning about mercury, pregnant women, and young children.

The stickers advise pregnant women, nursing women, women of childbearing age, and young children to limit consumption of certain types of seafood and avoid other types completely.

Albertsons has also updated an informational brochure and brochure holder about the subject. All materials are expected to be in place by the end of November.

The changes come at the end of a year long grassroots campaign organized by Women's Voices for the Earth. The organization feels those changes are due to their efforts.

"We got Albertsons to agree to what we had to asked them- to post the mercury advisory," Idaho Women's Leadership and Incineration Campaign Organizer Maria Mabbutt says.

Mabbutt helped organized protests outside Albertsons and a letter writing campaign.

"Women have the right to know if what we're consuming is safe or not safe," she tells CBS 2 News.

In a written statement, Albertsons didn't attribute their changes to any one person or organization.

"As a regular course of business and with regular input from all of our customers, we are continually evaluating and refining our communications with our customers," the statement reads.

Nutritionists say shoppers should pay attention to, but not be intimidated by, the new warnings. When consumed safely, fish benefit expectant moms.

"They're very high in omega-3 fatty acids which are essential not only for the mother's health, but the baby's health- especially for brain development and the nervous system development," Nutritionist Jane Barton tells CBS 2 News.
